Attractive, beneficial insect plant used within orchards and vineyards due to its many benefits. Low growing, hardy, easy to grow and drought tolerant it self-sows readily and flowers over a long season.
Sowing can be timed for when it is most needed in respect of pollinator activity and pollinating fruit crops.
Also ideal for predator insects as umbelliferae flowers with shallow florets suit their short mouth parts.
Sow 1 row for every 6-8 rows of trees or vines. Sow 3-5g per 10 square metres.
How to establish a drift of wildflowers:
- For best results a weed free patch of bare soil is recommended.
- Where possible prepare the soil to a fine and even consistency.
- As the seed will be broadcast it is best to blend the seed quantity within a seed raising mix to make it easier to spread. Blend at a ratio of 1:100 i.e. 10 grams of seed to 1kg of seed raising mix.
- Once blended divide the mix in half.
- Spread half of the mix walking in one direction across the area to be sown i.e. A to B
- Spread the other half of the mix walking across between the other two sides of the area to be sown i.e. C to D. Thereby ensuring an even distribution of seed across the whole area.
- Lightly rake the soil to cover the seed.
- Adjust the nozzle on your hose to a fine spray and water the whole area well.
- Monitor moisture levels in the soil, and water as appropriate to ensure seed has adequate moisture for germination and establishment.
