Common vetch, is a valuable cover crop widely used in gardening and farming. As a leguminous plant, it provides nitrogen fixation, improving soil fertility. Its extensive root system aids in erosion control, effectively preventing soil loss and providing stability to the ground. Common vetch’s ability to suppress weeds naturally reduces competition for resources, benefiting the growth of main crops. Moreover, its presence enriches the soil with organic matter, fostering a healthier soil environment and supporting robust plant growth during subsequent crop rotations.
When utilised as green mulch, common vetch enhances soil health by decomposing and releasing essential nutrients back into the soil. This process not only boosts soil fertility but also promotes microbial activity, aiding in nutrient cycling and overall soil quality improvement.
Additionally, it can serve as a habitat for beneficial wildlife and, in some cases, offer forage for livestock. Common vetch’s cold tolerance makes it suitable for various climates, but it is not nearly as cold tolerant as that of Hairy vetch. A versatile and sustainable option for gardeners and farmers looking to enhance soil health and crop productivity.
North Island: You can sow slightly later (April–early May) due to milder winters.
South Island: Aim for March–April to allow enough establishment before cold sets in.
