High-health, indeterminate, cherry tomato.
A disease resistant, highly productive heirloom variety that produces clusters of 2-inch, round, bright-orange fruit containing intense fruity flavours with a nice snappy tang. This variety tested with high levels of tetra-cis-lycopene in the 2019 year.
These seeds represent years of research trying to find the best tomatoes for human health.
Heritage Food Crops (HFC) believe that these varieties are strains of the original ‘golden’ tomatoes (named “Pomodoro” in Italy) that were introduced into Europe around 1520. They have retained the highly beneficial tetra-cis-lycopene that is easily absorbed by the human body when eaten raw. These tomatoes do not need to be cooked for you to receive all the benefits of the lycopene within them. (But even when they are cooked, they are still better for you than cooked red tomatoes!)
HFC believe that by distributing these seeds there is a wonderful opportunity to improve human health by adding golden/orange tomatoes to our diet. Tomatoes are the primary source of lycopene for human consumption. We know lycopene is a powerful biological antioxidant. Scientific studies have shown that high lycopene intake is associated with decreased risk of heart disease and cancer. Now the latest New Zealand research indicates that the golden/orange tomato varieties may be more beneficial for us than red tomatoes.
Red tomatoes contain a form of lycopene that is not easily absorbed by the body (unless they are cooked). Whereas some golden/orange tomatoes contain tetra-cis-lycopene, a form of lycopene that is more easily absorbed by the body when eaten raw or cooked and delivers a higher lycopene benefit.
