Autumn and late winter/early spring are the two main planting windows for hardy annuals. Autumn planting will give you the earliest blooms if you get them going early enough so that they can build a strong root system before the cold winter weather sets in. Some varieties are more cold tolerant than others, so what you plant and when you plant are both determined by your growing climate and your first and last frost dates.
