North American incense herb used in making smudge sticks. Aromatic in the garden, this multi-branching plant has thick stems and abundant dusty grey green foliage.
White sage is widely used by Native American peoples who utilise all parts of the plant.
The seed is a primary, traditional ingredient in pinole (roasted ground maize) as well being mixed with wheat flour and sugar to make gruel and biscuits.
For healing use, the seeds have been used to remove foreign objects from the eyes, similar to Clary Sage. A tea from the roots has been used for healing and strength after childbirth.
The stems and leaves have been used in ritual purification in many cultures.
Prefers a sunny location, well-draining soil and good air circulation.
Naturally low germination capacity. Germination of 30-50% to be expected.
