Classic garden flower bred by Gertrude Jekyll, equally famous as a plant breeder and for her garden designs. Her mix of Nigella includes rose, sky blue, dark blue and white all with double petals.
Useful as a short lived cut flower, excellent as a dried flower after it forms seed heads.
Can also be used in the kitchen with the young flower petals having a mild spicy flavour and the dried seeds a good substitute for cracked pepper in sauces (like its close cousin black cumin – Nigella sativa).
Easy to grow and self-seeds readily. Direct sow into the garden. If starting indoors, stratify seed.
Stratify: Chilling seeds in the fridge for 2-3 weeks prior to sowing will promote germination by breaking seed dormancy.
