This Mallow is a tall plant resembling its distant cousin the Hollyhock and has triangular velvety grey leaves and fuschia pink flowers with darker purple veining.
An amazing edible plant, the roots can be boiled to make the confectionery named after it, the leaves can be eaten in salads and the sweet tasting flowers are a decorative garnish for desserts and jellies or freeze the petals in ice cubes.
Left in the garden, they’re a magnet for butterflies and are hardy to most conditions. Cut back by 2/3 after flowering to encourage a tidy shape.
Stratify: Chilling seeds in the fridge for 2-3 weeks prior to sowing will promote germination by breaking seed dormancy.
