A beautiful flowering native, Kowhai is one of the best trees to attract tui and other native birds to your garden.
A tall selection with multiple trunks and prolific yellow flowers. Popular for large gardens, parklands or within native plantings.
Germination Capacity: Seed has been sustainably foraged and has not undergone commercial seed cleaning or grading. Natives can be erratic germinators and naturally low in germination capacity. Check expected germination rate under Product Information.
The seed has a hard seed coating which keeps moisture out and slows germination, so some assistance will hasten the process.
Scarify: Slightly nick (toenail clippers), chip or sand one end of the seed.
OR
Hot water treat: Place seed in boiling water and leave to soak for 12 hours.
Transplant to a larger pot when plants are 5-10cm tall and grow on further until ideally 30cm tall before planting.
Caution: The seeds of this plant are poisonous if ground or crushed before ingesting. Exercise caution around children and pets.
