A striking flowering plant native to New Zealand, characterised by its vibrant reddish-pink flowers that resemble the beak of the kaka bird.
This unique plant species is part of the legume family and is lauded for its ornamental value in gardens and landscapes. The kaka beak blooms in clusters of tubular flowers, attracting pollinators like birds with its nectar.
Unfortunately, due to habitat loss and predation, the kaka beak is considered a threatened species in the wild. Efforts to conserve and cultivate this beautiful plant are ongoing to preserve its beauty for future generations. Conservation status: Nationally critical.
Really susceptible to slugs and snails, so manage appropriately.
Germination Capacity: Seed has been sustainably foraged and has not undergone commercial seed cleaning or grading. Natives can be erratic germinators and naturally low in germination capacity. Check expected germination rate under Product Information.
The seed has a hard seed coating which keeps moisture out and slows germination, so some assistance will hasten the process.
Scarify: Slightly nick (toenail clippers), chip or sand one end of the seed.
OR
Hot water treat: Place seed in boiling water and leave to soak for 12 hours.
Surface Sow: Requires light to germinate. Sow seed on the surface. Press seed down into the soil. Keep moist.
Transplant to a larger pot when plants are 5-10cm tall and grow on further until ideally 30cm tall before planting in a sheltered spot.
It benefits from a heavy prune after flowering.
