Revive and regenerate your tired soils with a blend of quick growing summer legumes. Tic Bean, pea, lupin and vetch all produce masses of green matter above the ground as well as deeply penetrating the soil with nitrogen rich root nodules to break through soil pans and create pathways for beneficial microbial activity. The root mass can equal the green plant matter above in nutritional value. Mulch after 60 days or just prior to flowering.
North Island: You can sow slightly later (April–early May) due to milder winters.
South Island: Aim for March–April to allow enough establishment before cold sets in.
