Mustards and Smart Radish® are rich in glucosinolates—sulphur-containing compounds that, when broken down during incorporation into the soil, release isothiocyanates. These compounds act as natural biocides, suppressing harmful nematodes, fungi and weed seeds. Kohlrabi and rocket, also members of the brassica family, contribute similar biofumigant effects while adding valuable biomass. Marigold complements the blend by producing thiophenes, which are known to reduce nematode populations and deter some insect pests.

Additionally, the use of diverse species increases resilience to pests and environmental stressors, supports pollinators during flowering and reduces erosion during growth.
