Dichondra Repens (Mercury Bay)

Dichondra repens also known as Mercury Bay Weed and Kidney Weed, is an excellent alternative to traditional grass lawns for a variety of reasons. This groundcover plant is lauded for its lush, dense carpet-like appearance, making it a visually appealing option for lawns. One of the key characteristics is its low growth habit, which eliminates the need for frequent mowing, saving both time and effort for homeowners. Additionally, this plant is drought-resistant, requiring less water compared to traditional grasses, making it an eco-friendly choice for water conservation.

To establish a dense groundcover, best results come from spring sowings. Sow the seeds in trays and transplant out as a seedling when they reach 2-4 true leaf stage. Space at up to 20 plants or clumps per square metre. Maintain height and shape by regular clipping using a hedge trimmer, weed eater or lawn mower.
