Celosia Cramer’s Burgundy

Celosia ‘Cramer’s Burgundy’ (Celosia argentea var. cristata) is a striking annual plant known for its velvety, crested flower heads in deep burgundy-purple hues. These cockscomb-shaped blooms, resembling coral or brain-like forms, create dramatic visual interest in gardens and floral arrangements alike. Native to tropical regions, Celosia thrives in warm conditions.

Abundant wine-coloured flowers bloom prolifically on well-branched plants with approximately 15–20 stems per plant. Cramer’s varieties prove to be workhorses in the garden, selected by the late, and well-known, commercial flower farmer, Ralph Cramer.

As a cut flower, ‘Cramer’s Burgundy’ is prized for its bold colour, long vase life, and unique texture. It holds well both fresh and dried, making it popular with florists for use in contemporary and rustic arrangements. To dry, simply hang stems upside down in a dark, well-ventilated area.

In the garden, Celosia performs beautifully as a border plant, bringing vivid colour and sculptural form to flower beds. Growing to 60–90?cm tall, it adds vertical interest and pairs well with zinnias, marigolds, and ornamental grasses. Its upright habit and dense flower heads also attract bees and butterflies.

Home gardeners growing from seed should sow indoors in late winter to early spring. Seeds need warmth and light to germinate. Sow on the surface of moist seed mix and press down gently without covering. Once seedlings have two true leaves, transplant into individual pots and grow on before planting out after the last frost.

Celosia prefers full sun, well-drained soil, and regular watering. Avoid over-fertilising, which can cause lush foliage at the expense of flowers.
