Cultivated for its edible pods which are dried, ground and used to replace cocoa powder. Mostly dioecious with females setting the pods. Highly ornamental and worth growing as specimen tree. Reasonably frost hardy. Slow to germinate, the hard seed coat requires scarification. Needs bright light and warmth.
Scarify: Slightly nick (toenail clippers), chip or sand one end of the seed.
